One of the lovely things I've gotten to do during my holidays is visit a place I'd been wanting to for quite a while. I found Brindabella Gardens on the internet searching for roses in Queensland and they specialise in them. My sister ventured into the country to visit me and we spent a lovely couple of hours wandering in these gardens.
One of the things I was keen to investigate was their claim that they have available ornamental trees such as maples which we normally don't see here in the semi-tropics of Queensland. Far too hot!
When we got there I certainly received a very lovely surprise in that two of the plants they have available are rhodadendrons and cherry blossom trees ~ two plants I'd never in my wildest dreams thought I'd see up here ~ they usually like the cold! But it seems they have adapted them to our conditions.
I love azaleas and they are quite common around South East Queensland, but I hadn't realised that rhodadendrons are actually just huge versions of azaleas! These ones at the gardens were two or three metres high and at least three metres wide. Quite eye popping!
But it was the cherry blossom trees which totally entranced me. With white and pink flowers on the same clump of flowers, I couldn't take my eyes off them. We unfortunately just missed the main flush of flowers and they were near the end of their blooming, but it was enough to convince me I just had to have one!
Luckily for me it was my birthday a little while ago and I had a few dollars set aside to buy a present so I was able to buy a blossom tree.
Mine is a spindly little tree ~ it still has a few blossoms left on it, quite surprising really after rolling around in the back of my car! And the green leaves are sprouting already. Another big hole to dig! Apparently it will grow quite fast and be lovely and green until next Autumn when the leaves will fall off in time for spring when the blossoms will be out in full force. Imagine a whole avenue of these ~ mmmm, something to be thinking about for next year!
Those are just stunning! You photographed them beautifully; thank you for sharing!
